Diabetes is one of the most common diseases people live with today. While its common impact on the body and its organs are known quite well, there’s something which everyone may not be aware of! That, people with diabetes are at a higher risk of gum disease. Hence, ensuring that your oral health is good is an important part of managing your diabetes as well.

Among those with diabetes, people who have Type 2 diabetes are vulnerable to gum disease at least three times more than those who don’t have diabetes. It is important to note that even those with Type 1 diabetes are also at risk.

But what is the link between diabetes and increase vulnerability to gum disease?

It is simple, the high blood sugar level in the body of someone with diabetes could lead to more sugar in the saliva, which makes it a breeding ground for bacteria. These bacteria, in turn, leads to gum disease. In addition to that, it may so also happen that the high blood sugar may damage the blood vessels of your mouth which can also lead to gum disease as well as other oral health issues.

But how can you know if you have gum disease? Some of the common symptoms of gum disease are:

  • Constant bad breath despite taking measures
  • Redness in the gums
  • Swelling in the gums
  • Bleeding gums
  • Tenderness in gums
  • Pain while chewing
  • Longer appearing teeth due to receding gums
  • Tooth sensitivity / loose teeth

If you have any of the above symptoms, go to your dentist immediately.

However, this is avoidable. Managing your diabetes and maintaining good oral hygiene can help prevent gum disease and other related issues. Therefore, make sure that you check your blood sugar regularly and visit your doctor for regular checkups. More importantly, if you have diabetes, let your dentist know, so that, when you go for your dental checkup, the dentist can look for signs of gum disease / infection, if any.
